HDFC is phasing out the Swiggy credit card, and the default replacement halves Swiggy cashback

HDFC has begun migrating Swiggy HDFC Bank Credit Card holders to Swiggy Ornge or Swiggy BLCK. The existing card cannot be kept, and anyone who does not choose is moved to Ornge, where Swiggy cashback falls from 10% to 5%.

What changed

From 18 August 2026, HDFC Bank has begun what its own product page calls "a phased transition of existing Swiggy HDFC Bank Credit Card holders to either Swiggy Ornge or Swiggy BLCK variants". The upgrade FAQ is blunter: "Your existing Swiggy HDFC Bank Credit Card is being phased out and cannot be retained."

You pick one of two, or HDFC picks for you. Holders who do not respond "will be migrated to the Swiggy Ornge Card after a migration notice is sent at least 30 days in advance".

Who is affected

Everyone holding the Swiggy HDFC Bank Credit Card. The card stays on sale for now, so the change is aimed at existing holders.

Fees on migration follow your current status: a Lifetime Free card stays free on Ornge and costs ₹1,000 on BLCK; a fee-paying card becomes Lifetime Free on Ornge, or first-year-free then ₹1,000 on BLCK.

Read the small print, because it is unusually consequential. Your card number changes; the new card is reported to the credit bureaus as a new account; the upgrade is irrevocable and the old card "cannot be reinstated"; and autopay, e-mandates and standing instructions are not carried over — you re-register all of them. The old card dies at the earliest of your first transaction on the new one, 60 days from issuance, or its own expiry.

What to do

The rate cut is worse than it looks, because the cap did not move with it. On the old card, 10% capped at ₹1,500 a cycle meant ₹15,000 of Swiggy spend maxed your cashback. On Ornge, 5% against the same ₹1,500 cap means you now need ₹30,000 a month on Swiggy to earn the same ₹1,500. Below ₹15,000 a month you simply earn half.

So the decision is one number: your monthly Swiggy spend. Above about ₹10,000 a month, BLCK's retained 10% is worth its extra ₹500 of fee — ₹10,000 at 10% is ₹1,000 a month against ₹500 at 5%, recovering the fee difference in a single cycle. Below that, take Ornge, which is free for you, pays a wider 1% cap (₹1,000 against ₹500) and throws in 12 months of Swiggy One instead of three.

Do not let the clock choose. Doing nothing hands you Ornge and the halved rate. If food delivery is not really where your money goes, our cashback rankings compare every flat-rate alternative.
