SBI Card has put two limits on redeeming Reward Points for statement credit, both effective 1 April 2026: a ceiling of 60,000 points a month, and a rule that redemptions happen only in multiples of 4,000 points. The cap is the headline. The block rule is the one that will actually touch your account.
What changed
Two separate notices on SBI Card's own customer-notice page, with different exception lists:
| Rule, from 1 April 2026 | Applies to | Does not apply to |
|---|---|---|
| Statement-credit redemption capped at 60,000 Reward Points a month | All eligible SBI credit cards | Air India SBI Signature, PhonePe SBI Card PURPLE, PhonePe SBI Card SELECT BLACK |
| Statement credit redeemable only in multiples of 4,000 Reward Points | All eligible SBI credit cards | PhonePe SBI Card PURPLE, PhonePe SBI Card SELECT BLACK |
The difference matters: Air India SBI Signature is exempt from the monthly cap but not from the 4,000-point block rule. Neither notice changes how points are earned, and neither touches the rewards catalogue or voucher redemptions.
Who is affected
Every SBI card that earns Reward Points and redeems them for statement credit — among the cards we hold, SBI Card ELITE, SBI Card PULSE, SBI Card PRIME and SBI Card IRCTC.
The SBI Cashback Credit Card is not affected: it pays direct cashback and issues no Reward Points, so there is nothing to cap.
What to do
At ₹0.25 a Reward Point (how we value points), the monthly cap is ₹15,000 of statement credit a month. Almost nobody reaches it. Computed from ELITE's record — 2 points per ₹100 on retail spends, plus the ₹3 lakh, ₹4 lakh, ₹5 lakh and ₹8 lakh milestone slabs — a year of earning looks like this:
| Profile | Points earned in a year | Redeemable in 4,000-point blocks | Left over |
|---|---|---|---|
| Everyday spender (₹35,000/month) | 28,400 | 28,000 (₹7,000) | 400 points (₹100) |
| Online-first shopper (₹55,000/month) | 48,200 | 48,000 (₹12,000) | 200 points (₹50) |
| Frequent traveller (₹1.1 lakh/month) | 76,400 | 76,000 (₹19,000) | 400 points (₹100) |
Not one of those profiles earns 60,000 points in a month, so the cap never binds. The block rule strands rather than destroys: the remainder sits in the account until enough points accumulate to complete the next block. We did not verify SBI's point-expiry rule on an official page today and make no claim about what happens if that block is never completed.
So this change is small, and it moves the case for no SBI card. What it changes is the shape of a redemption: check your balance against the nearest multiple of 4,000 first, or leave a slice behind. Assumptions behind the table are in how we compare cards.
