The number on the marketing page is the number before tax. Add 18% to every fee, charge and interest figure to get what actually leaves your account.Illustrative18% GST is the statutory rate on credit card fees and charges. The fee itself is whatever your card quotes — type yours in.

A credit card can cost you nothing to own, or it can quietly cost more than it ever returns. The difference is not luck — it is a handful of charges, most of which are optional if you know the rules, and two of which are genuinely expensive.

Start with the rule that applies to all of them: add 18% GST to every quoted number. Almost every fee and charge on an Indian credit card attracts it, so a ₹500 annual fee is really ₹590 out of your account. The tax is set by tax rules, not by the bank, so it is identical across issuers and there is no card that escapes it.

This matters most when you are comparing two cards whose fees look close. ₹500 against ₹750 is a gap of ₹250 on the marketing page and ₹295 in reality. Do the conversion once, at the start, and every later comparison in this chapter is already in real rupees.

Type any fee into the figure above and it shows you what actually leaves the account.
