Our verdict

On steady-state net value (rewards + milestones − annual fee), the HDFC Millennia Credit Card wins 2 of our 3 modelled spending patterns. The SBI Cashback Credit Card takes the rest — so the right answer still depends on your mix. For a personal answer, put your real numbers into the recommender.

Both cards advertise the same headline — 5% cashback. The difference is where that 5% applies and what you have to do to collect it. The SBI Cashback card earns 5% on almost any online transaction and credits it to your statement automatically; the Millennia earns 5% only at a fixed list of partner brands, and everything else earns 1% as CashPoints you have to redeem yourself.

SBI Cashback Credit Card and HDFC Millennia Credit Card compared side by side

How the fees and waiver thresholds compare

On paper the fees are nearly identical — ₹999 for the SBI Cashback card, ₹1,000 for the Millennia, both as joining fee and annual fee, GST extra. The waiver rules are where they diverge sharply.

  • SBI Cashback: the ₹999 renewal fee is reversed if you spend ₹2,00,000 or more in the preceding year — roughly ₹16,700 a month.
  • HDFC Millennia: the renewal fee is waived at ₹1,00,000 or more in annual spends — roughly ₹8,350 a month.

The Millennia's threshold is half the SBI card's. If your total card spending sits between ₹1,00,000 and ₹2,00,000 a year, the Millennia is effectively free from year two while the SBI card keeps charging ₹999 plus GST. That fee is not a dealbreaker — the worked examples below show the SBI card out-earning the Millennia even after paying it — but it is a real, recurring cost to price in. Our annual fee waiver guide covers how spend-based waivers are tracked and the traps to avoid.

Where does each card actually earn 5%?

This is the heart of the comparison, and it is not close.

SBI Cashback: 5% on (almost) everything online

The SBI Cashback card earns 5% on online spending broadly — marketplaces, food delivery, travel bookings, small independent sites. You do not need to shop at approved merchants or route purchases through a portal. Offline spends earn 1%.

The caveat: SBI maintains an exclusion list, and it has grown over time. Categories such as rent, utility payments, fuel, insurance and wallet loads typically earn no cashback at all. Before you apply, read the current exclusion list in the card's most important terms and conditions (MITC) on sbicard.com — it is the single most important piece of fine print on this card.

HDFC Millennia: 5% at select partner brands only

The Millennia's 5% applies only at a fixed list of partner brands. The list has changed over the years but has typically featured big consumer names — the likes of Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, Swiggy, Zomato and Uber. Confirm the live list on hdfcbank.com before applying, because a brand dropping off the list directly cuts your earn rate.

Everything outside the partner list — including other online shopping — earns 1%. A ₹3,000 order on a partner app earns the equivalent of ₹150, while the same ₹3,000 at a non-partner store earns ₹30. On the SBI card, both would earn ₹150 as long as the transaction is online and not excluded.

The structural point: the SBI card's 5% zone is a superset of the Millennia's. Any partner-brand spend that earns 5% on the Millennia would also earn 5% on the SBI card — it is online, after all — but the reverse is not true. On pure earn rate the Millennia cannot beat the SBI card; it can only match it.

Monthly caps: where the 5% stops

Neither card pays 5% without limit. Both issuers cap the accelerated cashback you can earn in a statement cycle, and both have revised those caps before — which is exactly why we do not print a number here that could be stale by the time you read it. Check the current cap in each card's MITC before you apply.

What matters is how to use the cap once you know it. The arithmetic is simple: divide the monthly cap by 5% to find the spend level where the 5% stops.

If a card caps accelerated cashback at ₹X per cycle, your 5% earning stops after ₹X ÷ 0.05 of qualifying spend. A ₹1,500 cap, for example, would cover ₹30,000 of 5% spending a month; beyond that you are earning the base 1% — or nothing, depending on the card's rules.

  1. Caps usually apply per statement cycle, not per calendar month. A big purchase timed just before your statement date can eat the whole cycle's cap.
  2. The base 1% often has its own separate cap. Read both numbers, not just the headline one.

If your online spending is large enough to blow past either card's cap every month, a two-card strategy or a different card class altogether may serve you better — run your numbers through the card recommender to see.

Redemption: auto-credit vs CashPoints

This is the most underrated difference between the two cards.

SBI Cashback credits your cashback directly to the card statement automatically. There is no points balance, no redemption portal, no minimum threshold to remember and nothing that can expire. What you earn is what you get.

HDFC Millennia earns CashPoints. The 5% figure assumes you redeem them against your statement, where a CashPoint is valued at ₹1 — the best available rate. Redeem them instead for flights or hotels through HDFC's SmartBuy portal and the per-point value typically drops, which quietly lowers your effective cashback rate. CashPoints also carry an expiry window, and HDFC has at times levied a small fee per redemption request — check the current schedule of charges.

None of this makes the Millennia's rewards bad. It does mean the Millennia demands housekeeping — log in, redeem, watch expiry — while the SBI card demands nothing. If you have ever let points lapse on an old card, weight this section heavily. Our reward point values page tracks what each major currency is really worth.

Milestones, lounge and extras

Here the Millennia claws back ground.

  • Lounge access: the Millennia offers 1 domestic lounge visit per quarter — up to 4 a year. The SBI Cashback card offers no lounge access at all in our verified data.
  • Welcome benefit: the Millennia comes with a welcome benefit worth about ₹1,000, typically delivered as CashPoints once you pay the joining fee. The SBI Cashback card has none.
  • Milestones: HDFC has periodically run quarterly spend milestones on the Millennia with voucher rewards; treat these as a bonus rather than a promise, and verify the current offer on hdfcbank.com.
  • Eligibility: HDFC lists a minimum income of ₹35,000 a month for the Millennia. SBI Card does not publish a single figure for the Cashback card; eligibility is assessed case by case.

One shared weakness worth flagging: both cards charge a 3.5% forex markup, so neither belongs in your wallet for international spending. Our forex markup guide explains what that costs in practice.

Worked example: three spender profiles

All figures use the verified rates above — 5% accelerated, 1% base — and assume spends stay within each card's monthly cap and outside the exclusion lists.

Priya — ₹15,000 a month, mostly everyday spends

Priya spends ₹8,000 a month online (₹5,000 of it at Millennia partner brands) and ₹7,000 offline. Annual spend: ₹1,80,000.

SBI Cashback: (₹8,000 × 5%) + (₹7,000 × 1%) = ₹400 + ₹70 = ₹470 a month, or ₹5,640 a year. Her ₹1,80,000 annual spend misses the ₹2,00,000 waiver, so she pays the ₹999 renewal fee: net ₹4,641 before GST on the fee.

HDFC Millennia: (₹5,000 × 5%) + (₹10,000 × 1%) = ₹250 + ₹100 = ₹350 a month, or ₹4,200 a year. She clears the ₹1,00,000 waiver, so the fee is nil: net ₹4,200.

The SBI card wins by about ₹441 a year even while paying its fee. If Priya nudges her spending past ₹2,00,000, the gap widens to ₹1,440.

Rahul — ₹25,000 a month, heavy online shopper

Rahul spends ₹15,000 a month online (₹9,000 at partner brands) and ₹10,000 offline. Annual spend: ₹3,00,000.

SBI Cashback: (₹15,000 × 5%) + (₹10,000 × 1%) = ₹750 + ₹100 = ₹850 a month, or ₹10,200 a year. Fee reversed at his spend level.

HDFC Millennia: (₹9,000 × 5%) + (₹16,000 × 1%) = ₹450 + ₹160 = ₹610 a month, or ₹7,320 a year. Fee waived.

The SBI card earns ₹2,880 more per year. The Millennia's four lounge visits and welcome-year benefit would need to be worth nearly ₹3,000 to him to close that gap.

Ananya — ₹20,000 a month, partner-brand loyalist who flies often

Ananya spends ₹12,000 a month at Millennia partner brands, ₹2,000 on other online spends and ₹6,000 offline. Annual spend: ₹2,40,000.

SBI Cashback: (₹14,000 × 5%) + (₹6,000 × 1%) = ₹700 + ₹60 = ₹760 a month, or ₹9,120 a year. Fee reversed.

HDFC Millennia: (₹12,000 × 5%) + (₹8,000 × 1%) = ₹600 + ₹80 = ₹680 a month, or ₹8,160 a year. Fee waived.

The cashback gap shrinks to ₹960 a year. If Ananya uses even two or three of her four domestic lounge visits, the Millennia arguably comes out ahead — this is the profile where it genuinely competes.

Which card should you get?

Get the SBI Cashback card if your online spending is spread across many merchants, you want zero redemption effort, and you spend ₹2,00,000 or more a year — or the maths still works for you after the ₹999 fee. For most online-first spenders it is the stronger card; the worked examples above show it out-earning the Millennia in every profile on pure cashback.

Get the HDFC Millennia if the bulk of your online spending already sits with its partner brands, your annual spend lands in the ₹1,00,000–₹2,00,000 band where only the Millennia's fee gets waived, or a quarterly domestic lounge visit has real value to you. It is also the only one of the two with a welcome benefit.

Consider holding both if your online spends are high: Millennia for partner brands plus lounge access, SBI Cashback for everything else online. Just make sure each card individually crosses its waiver threshold, or the second fee erodes the gain.

Frequently asked

Is the SBI Cashback Credit Card better than the HDFC Millennia Credit Card?

For most of the spending patterns we model, the HDFC Millennia Credit Card comes out ahead on net annual value (rewards minus fees). The SBI Cashback Credit Card still wins for some profiles — check the persona table for the pattern closest to yours.

Which card has the lower annual fee?

SBI Cashback Credit Card has the lower annual fee (₹999 vs ₹1,000), before any waiver conditions.

Can I hold both cards?

Yes — banks assess each application independently, and pairing complementary cards is a common strategy. Mind the combined fees, your credit utilisation, and space out applications so multiple hard enquiries don't dent your score.

How is the net value calculated?

We apply each card's verified reward rates and caps to a monthly spend pattern, add unlocked milestone benefits, and subtract the annual fee — steady-state, excluding one-time welcome bonuses. The full formula is on our methodology page.

What is the fee waiver on the SBI Cashback card?

The ₹999 renewal fee is reversed if you spend ₹2,00,000 or more in the preceding year. The HDFC Millennia's waiver threshold is half that, at ₹1,00,000 of annual spend.

Which brands give 5% cashback on the HDFC Millennia?

A fixed list of partner brands that HDFC revises from time to time — it has typically included large consumer names such as Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, Swiggy, Zomato and Uber. Check the current list on hdfcbank.com before applying, because a brand leaving the list cuts your earn rate directly.

Does the SBI Cashback card offer lounge access?

No. In our verified data it carries no lounge benefit. The HDFC Millennia offers 1 domestic lounge visit per quarter, up to 4 a year.

Does the SBI Cashback card pay 5% on every online spend?

Not quite. It earns 5% on online spending broadly, without a merchant list — but SBI maintains an exclusion list that has typically covered rent, utility payments, fuel, insurance and wallet loads, and those categories usually earn nothing. Read the current list in the card's MITC on sbicard.com before you build a routine around it.
