A rejected application does not tell you which card to try next. First ask for the specific reason. RBI’s credit-card directions require issuers to communicate rejection reasons in writing.
Check the exact product and criterion
An issuer may assess age, documented income, location, existing borrowing, repayment history and its own credit policy. Passing a published minimum does not establish that you will be approved. We have removed the earlier catalogue-wide counts because several stored income figures were approximate rather than verified issuer criteria.
For example, HDFC Millennia publishes an applicant age range of 21–40 and net monthly salary of ₹35,000 for salaried applicants. A high credit score does not override that product’s stated age band. Other cards can have different criteria.
Compare income on the same basis
Monthly take-home salary, gross annual salary and annual income declared in an ITR are different measures. Multiplying a monthly figure by twelve changes its period; it does not turn gross salary into net salary. Read the label and use the documents requested by the bank.
Our calculator does not set cards aside using income figures explicitly marked approximate or unverified. Where the bank does not publish a usable criterion, we say so instead of treating missing information as a zero-income requirement.
There is no universal CIBIL approval threshold
A score is one input to a lending decision. We have withdrawn the claim that no Indian issuer publishes a threshold: Indian Overseas Bank’s RuPay FAQ gives a score-related condition for a particular deposit-backed route. That does not create a rule for every card or applicant.
Read our CIBIL criterion guide for the distinction between a lender’s published condition and a general score rule of thumb.
What to do after a rejection
- Obtain the written reason and check for missing or mismatched documents.
- Review your credit report for accounts or payment information you do not recognise, and raise genuine errors with the lender and bureau.
- Apply again when the relevant circumstances or documentation have changed, following any waiting period that issuer specifies.
- Avoid several speculative applications at once. Each lender may make a credit enquiry; another application does not resolve the original reason.
There is no site-wide waiting period or guaranteed next card we can promise. A rejected application is also not the same event as a missed repayment.
Frequently asked questions
Does meeting the minimum income guarantee approval?
No. It satisfies one stated condition only. The bank makes the final decision.
Should I use gross salary or take-home salary?
Use the basis the issuer specifies. If it asks for net monthly income, a gross annual salary figure is not directly comparable.
When should I apply again?
Check the issuer’s own policy and the reason given for rejection. Reapplying without changing the relevant facts may produce the same result.
